Where is Turkey located in the World?
#Turkey; (Officially the Republic of Turkey) is located between #Europe and #Asia continents.
#Greece to the west; Bulgaria to the northwest; #Georgia to the northeast; #Armenia, the Azerbaijani exclave of Nakhchivan and Iran to the east; and Iraq and Syria to the south are our neighbors.
Turkey has two parts; #Thrace and #Anatolia. Thrace is located in #Europe continent, and Anatolia is located in Asia Continent. Anatolia is surrounded by three sea. The Aegean Sea is to the west, the Black Sea to the north, and the #Mediterranean Sea to the south. The #Bosphorus, the Sea of Marmara and the #Dardanelles, which together form the Turkish Straits, divide #Thrace and #Anatolia; they also separate #Europe and #Asia continents.

#Turkey is located in the northern hemisphere between the 360– 420 northern parallel and it is one of the #Mediterranean countries. Turkey has 9 agricultural zones (AZ).

Geographically, Anatolia and Thrace have been suitable for grape production for thousands of years. Because of ecological conditions grapevines can be grown all over the country. Turkey is the one of the gene center of grapevines. The collection of 1200 grape varieties has been established and Turkish National Grapevine Genetic Reserve is created as a result of Tekirdag Viticulture Research Institute’s leading project since 19603.

Wine has been produced in this region for thousands of years. It began to appear that, the production of wine claimed to have started in Mesopotamia between 5 and 6 thousand years ago. According to recent researches, Georgia and Armenia are announced as the first place where wine is produced in the world. In the map you are going to see archaeological sites of the Neolithic, Copper Age, and early Bronze Age in which vestiges of wine growing have been found2.

If we look from global production to local production. Total global grape fruit production was reached 75 m tons in 2014. 44% of the grape production consisted of unpressed grapes, while the other 53% was mainly used for wine production4.
7% of total grape production on the world produced in Turkey, for this reason Turkey ranks 5th in world grape production list. In Turkey 497.000 ha area under vines and 3.6 m tons grape produced in 20154 .
World’s dried grape / raisin production was 1,5 m tons in 2014. 28% of this which was 429 k tons dried grapes were produced in Turkey in 2014 and 229 tons were exported from Turkey to the world.4
Global table grape production was 27 m tons, and 2 m tons table grapes was produced in Turkey, means 8 % of global production in 20144.
Turkey’s wine production is 620.000 hl, beer production is 9.02 m hl and distilled beverages / spirits (raki, vodka, gin, whisky and liquor) production is 520.000 hl in 20155.
